FAQ

What is DCYA: Dearborn County CASA Youth Ambassadors -Working with the motto of PREVENTION FIRST the Youth Ambassador program is a unique community-based volunteer program within the CASA organization. It is composed of youth from all three-public school districts, private schools and homeschoolers, who volunteer outside of their school, and extracurricular commitments toward Substance Abuse Awareness. This leadership program provides in school assemblies for elementary schoolers, an annual youth summit for the counties eight graders and a dynamic social media presence for positivity.

I’m an agency or organization having an event can you volunteer as helpers?

As much as we would love to help everyone-we focus strictly on our prevention efforts and have a very tight schedule therefore we unfortunately cannot provide volunteers for events. We can however post your need on our social media as we have many teen followers who may be interested in community volunteer opportunities.

What exactly does DCYA do?

We do substance abuse prevention Assemblies called “SPARKS” for elementary and preschool children. Click here for more info or to schedule a sparks assembly click here. We put on a county wide Youth summit in April for all 8th grade students living in Dearborn County with the theme of substance abuse prevention and education. We also provide information via social media for our high school aged peers and beyond. We work with the local School corporations, city, county and state government agencies as well as the justice system to make positive change for youth in the area of substance abuse prevention.

I might want to join How much of a time commitment is it?

We have two 1.5-hour meetings per month, but you are only required to attend 10 per year. There are Five committees in which you can choose specifically to work with, each has a committee chair who will help you achieve your commitment to that committee. You are given a calendar of all meetings and events 1 year in advance so that you can schedule appropriately.

Why DCYA?

There are THREE major reasons why DCYA works: 1- Alcohol and other drug use is less prevalent where non-use is recognized as an acceptable and common choice and youth misperceptions regarding the actual amount of drug use are corrected.  2- Innovative peer leadership models can bring about solutions and change where false beliefs can put youth at risk. 3- DCYA’s unique brand of peer leadership enables non-using youth to model and advocate non-use as a rewarding and positive life choice thus challenging and correcting the misperception that “all youth drink, vape, smoke or do drugs”.
